Friday 17th October

AFRODITE! – Åse Hagerman & Alba Show Chorus

AFRODITE captures the whole! A class focused on the ingredients of Vocal Production: Air, Flow, Resonance, Oral sounds, Dimensions, Interaction, Tempo, Energy and how we can teach/practise them all together. This method gives pictures and ideas to sing more efficiently using integrated motor skills. Demonstrated by exercises and warm-ups.

Suitable for: All.

Energise, Explore and Express Yourself – Åse Hagerman & Alba Show Chorus

Using the symposium songs and a variety of exercises we will polish the blending of voices, vocal energy and ways to express ourselves. By using our individual strengths and differences we inspire each other to develop an inner ear and an outer persona.

Suitable for: All.

The Fundamentals of Directing – Glenn Chaney (Master Director, Regional Faculty)

This class will cover the fundamentals of directing including starting and finishing a song, establishing the beat, presence in front of the chorus, and directing in a show/contest.

Suitable for: Novice Directors, Assistant Directors, Music Team members and anyone interested in improving their directing skills.

Symposium Chorus Rehearsals – Åsa Fagerström and Carina Bakke (Assistant Directors, Alba Show Chorus)

Work with your directors to perfect the two symposium songs – vocally and visually!

Barbershop for Beginners – Valerie Taylor (Approved Candidate Judge, Regional Faculty)

Are you new to barbershop? This class will take you through the basics of barbershop at chorus, regional and international levels. If you have ever wondered what “RMT” stands for, what happens when you go “down the tiles” or why you need an inner smile, this class is for you!

Suitable for: Those new to barbershop.

Warm Ups for Small Choruses – Åse Hagerman & Alba Show Chorus

Warm-ups for all levels of vocal production. Healthy voice training integrating breathing, relaxed phonation and resonation. Includes instructions about how our voice works and what the warm-ups should help us focus on.

The Elements and You – Åse Hagerman & Alba Show Chorus

Discovering the four Elements and how you can use them as a tool for vocal unity, visual enhancement, rhythmic sensation, dynamics and emotional message. Involves practical activity.

How to run a PVI – Valerie Taylor (Approved Candidate Judge, Regional Faculty)

Do you want to give Personal Vocal Instruction? Find out how to help your singers achieve even greater things. PVI techniques will be demonstrated (volunteer required!) enabling you to explore some of the tools you can use.

Suitable for: Anyone wishing to give a PVI – Section Leaders, Music Staff, Directors.

Directors’ Forum Part 1 – Elaine Hamilton (Regional Faculty)

This is an opportunity for front line directors to network and discuss topics of interest. Examples include tools for teaching adults, and catering for different learning styles.

Suitable for: Front line directors only.

Directors’ Forum Part 2 – Åse Hagerman & Alba Show Chorus; facilitated by Valerie Taylor (Approved Candidate Judge, Regional Faculty)

This class will include a discussion forum in which front line directors will be able to put questions to Åse. In the second half of the session there will be an opportunity to receive coaching from Åse as you direct Alba Show chorus.

Suitable for: Front line directors only.

The Inner Drum – Åse Hagerman

Through rhythmic exercises and subdivided beats you’ll find that your inner percussion helps to stabilise tempo and makes the music more exciting!

Organising a Small Chorus – Alba Show Chorus

Visualize the work and the commitment is easier to overview! Alba share their ideas around teamwork and communication.

Suitable for: Management Team/Board members and Music Team.

Using Tags to Develop Vocal Skills – Alyson Chaney (Approved International Faculty)

Singing tags is not just fun, it's also a way to develop and reinforce vocal skills. This fun class will look at aspects of good vocal production which will be exemplified by the chosen tags.

Quartet Coaching – Glenn Chaney (Master Director, Regional Faculty)

This is an opportunity for a quartet to receive coaching from Master Director, Glenn Chaney. All quartets attending the workshop may apply and a name will be drawn and announced on Saturday morning.

An interactive class where you train to hear/see what the failures can be in a contest performance. A fun and relaxed way of learning about the four Sweet Adelines Judging Categories.

Riser Placement: Expand Your Sound! – Åse Hagerman & Alba Show Chorus

Have you ever wondered why it matters who we stand next to when we sing? Prepare to be amazed as Åse expands the sound of Alba Show Chorus simply by moving singers from one place to another. This class will demonstrate how different voice qualities can enhance those around them and how, by carefully placing your singers, you can expand the sound of your chorus. A class not to be missed!
